I took this image along the San-Raphael Swell in Utah. I was off the main road and exploring a bit when I heard the thunder. I’m always wary of going on the lesser used dirt roads in the desert areas of The Colorado Plateau when the weather is iffy. Even with 4WD these roads can become impassable when they get wet and flash floods can leave a vehicle stranded on the wrong side of a wash for hours or days. Despite this, I love the desert when it rains, the colors become so rich and the storms are usually quite dramatic, but one has to remain alert to changing conditions and always be prepared for a night or two of unplanned camping.
